Hunedoara Rally

Rallye Hunedoara is one of  the fastest Rallies of  the Season. The Special Stages take place on locked asphalt streets between Deva and Hunedoara, as well as Hunedoara and Hasdat / Haget / Toplita.

Some of  the streets are recently tarred, that means very slippery; the unrenovated streets are partial very ripply and with lots of  bumpiness. Two new short Stages, in both ways to be driven, came extra in the program; both almost continuos with „Volga" to be driven.

Our top speed at this rallye was at almost 200 km/h, while the average was about 112 km/h.

 

Our preparation

The training succeded without any problem, so that we could start the Rally good prepared.

 

Day 1 of the Rallye: Friday, 09.05.2008

Conditions:

Weather - cloudy, partial thundery

Asphalt - dry, moistly in wood.

 

In the first day were 5 SS in the program. The frst one, „Almas", a 7 km long uphill-downhill stage, which has to be driven from Deva to Hunedoa-ra, had to be canceled because of  an accident on the route.  This is why the rallye started for us and for our Evo 5 with the SS „Cincisi", a 15 km long, challenging stage, along a river. On some parts of  the road the asphalt is very ripply and it makes a big diference, these bumpy curves in training or during the race to drive, when is required a bigger attention.  In wood sectors, at the end of  the stage, was the street not only ripply, but also moistly, muddy and very slippery, what demands a high concentration of  the dry tires, so that the car won't „fy". We reached the 3rd fastest time in our group. After a regrouping we had to drive the same stage back - we drove with 8.00 min better and reached a very good time, which assu-red us the 2nd place in our group, after Dodo Pitigoi in Ford Focus WRC.

SS 4 was the SS 1 in reversed way and we drove with 4.05 min better the

2nd time in our group; the very strong team Abraham/ Silasi with an Evo 9 had problems, because of  a „departure" in SS 2, also had the team Berari/ Sandu  technical problems with a very strong Evo 9, what gave us a good advance.

SS 5 was a Superspecial from Hotel Sarmis in Deva; we had to drive the minimum time on a 1,4 km long, blocked parcours with artifcial obstacles. We haven't calculate good a curve and we defected immediately in the „Racing Speed". The mistake cost us about 5-8 seconds; still was our 2nd place for that day assured.

 

Day 2 of the Rallye: Saturday, 10.05.2008

Conditions:

Weather - cloudy

Asphalt - dry

 

The second day included 10 SS in the program.

We started again with the SS 1, „Almas" from the previous day, which could be droven this time. We mastered this SS good, still we haven't note good he end of  the stage and stopped the racing speed with about 500 m before the end. This cost us 5-6 seconds and 3 chasers behind: the team Ionescu/ Dumitriu in Ford Escort BDA and the teams Abraham/ Silasi and Berari/ Sandu, both in super strong Evo 9, who managed to solve their problems from the previous day and now were „attacking" us.

The team Abraham/ Silasi took us 20 sec. Now hoisted it full concentration and no mistake. On the next SS „Hasdat", where in the last year we distroied two tires in a curve, what meant the end of  the rallye for us, this time we knew exactly which curves we could cut short and which not.

We had no problem on the 15,4 km long, very fast SS and drove, with 7,55min a very good time, still took us the team Abraham/ Silasi again 20 sec.

The next two short and fast SS 8 and 9 ended we on the 2nd and 3rd place in our group; in SS 10 took us the team Abraham/ Silasi again 15 sec, but we still had 1 minute advance at the end of  the frst round.

The team Ionescu/ Dumitriu failed with about 45 sec behind us. This advance should have been enough, if  the hitch wouldn't have shown new signs of  wastage; this was the big question: keeps the couple up and for how long manage we to oppose the aggresive Abraham with a „slippery" couple.

 

We started the last round from 5 special stages. SS 11 + 12, the two short fast stages, were good; in the SS 13 „Sivas" („Hasdat" in opposite way) we noticed the recessive coupler at acceleration and hoped not to waste to much time.

When the times were compared we discovered that we were only minimal slower than the team Abraham/ Silasi who, in the battle for the 2nd place, registered another „departure", that cost them time. So we had before the SS 14, the last stage before the Superspeciala, about 1 min advance and could improve a little our coupler.

But another problem after the SS 13: the rear brake blocked because of  the overheating.

We barely could take our Evo away from the time control - and had to go to Hunedoara for Superspecial. More closed manoevers unblocked the brake a little, so we still had to wait and see if  the cooling will unblock the brake.

The brake was torrid hot, still we had luck and the brake unblocked by itself.

The question was still up: was it cool enough, so that she won't block again in the next SS.

The SS 15 is, for our luck, a short stage, a slalom from Hotel Rusca in Hu-nedoara, a showdrive for the viewers. All ran good and no new problems appeared.

„Good" news arrived to us per SMS before the last SS: in the opening the team Pitigoi/ Csomortani with the Ford Focus WRC had to give up before the SS 15 because of  the technical problems - so we came from our hard contested 2nd place on the 1st place in our group, followed by the teams Abraham/ Silasi and Berari/ Sandu. Overall we ended on the 11th place.

 

In the championship we are located on the 2nd place in group H, with one point behind the leading team Abraham/ Silasi.

 

Facts

A new and exciting rallye; we had to fght until the last SS, not only with our chasers , but also with technical problems, which we managed to solve until the next rallye in Cluj thanks to our MIT Motors Team.

 

An anewed thank to all who supported us, especial-ly to our Team from MIT Motors, who worked until the last minute for the preparing of  our Evo.
